Jackson Browne truly running on empty

I used to like Jackson Browne back when he was still putting out good music... In sixty-nine he was twenty one and called the road his own...

Lately the tired old liberal is out of creativity with nothing better to do than file frivolous lawsuits... I don't know when that road turned into the road he's on...

The Ohio Republican Party used his song «Running on Empty» as an entirely appropriate theme for a campaign spot on Obama's anti-production energy plans...Running on - running on empty...

So, did Jackson Browne ask the Ohio GOP for a license fee like an artist worried about his property rights? Of course not, he did what any good liberal entertainer would do - sued the Republican Senator from Arizona! Ohio, Arizona! If you're from New York or Los Angeles they all look the same...Running on - running blind, Running on - running into the sun...

The Ohio GOP and Senator McCain settled today...I dont know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels...

Browne hopes he's sent a message to Republicans who dare use anything but country music in a campaign spot - «We better not. They'll sue you…» Running into the sun...But Im running behind...

I guess when you're out of talent, you do what you have to do... Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive, Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive...

The albums Late for the Sky, The Pretenders, and I'm Alive would easily make my top ten fave albums of all time. I love his music. The man, his politics, and his nuttiness, not so much.

Tom usually writes some very spot-on columns. However, the one on Jackson Browne was well below his standards. I've known Jackson for several years, and find him not only talented, but much more intellectually capable than Tom Hanna gives him credit for. «Stick with what you know», Tom.

DJ: My thoughts were less inspired by any thought that Jackson Browne lacks intellectual capacity than by his apparent contempt for any fans who don't toe a political line. Since I'm one of the folks he apparently has contempt for, I decided to write my thoughts and did write about what I know - the typical entertainer's thirst for conservative Heartland dollars and liberal adoration.

The suit seemed to have one of two purposes (or perhaps both) - publicity or sending an anti-GOP message. The McCain campaign was prohibited by campaign finance laws from any involvement in the production of an Ohio GOP campaign spot, so suing McCain was simply intended to get the big name in the picture. If it was for publicity, it reeks of desperation. If it was to send an anti-GOP message, it was just not very well thought out. It's as if he set out to say «I don't want you as fans» to the GOP when his major appeal is to a demographic that is one of the GOPs most solid - white males 35+. Alternatives from an intellectually capable artist with intellectually capable PR and marketing people? If it was about property rights - negotiate a royalty payment and forgo the press conference. If it was about politics - issue a statement to the effect of «While I'm flattered that the GOP leaders are fans and value all my fans of whatever political persuasion, I want to make clear that I am not personally endorsing Senator McCain.»
