1964, Senator
«You know I don't know when, when they decided they wanted to make a virtue out of selfishness»
Well, Senator, the simple answer is 1964. Since I know you're a little fuzzy on the math, you were 3 years old then.

In the introduction to her collection of essays on ethical philosophy, The Virtue of Selfishness (VOS), Rand writes that the «exact meaning» of selfishness is «concern with one's own interests» (VOS, vii). In that work, Rand argues that a virtue is an action by which one secures and protects one's rational values—ultimately, one's life and happiness. Since a concern with one's own interests is a character trait that, when translated into action, enables one to achieve and guard one's own well-being, it follows that selfishness is a virtue. One must manifest a serious concern for one's own interests if one is to lead a healthy, purposeful, fulfilling life.

Virtue, as they say about beauty, is in «the eye of the beholder».
Of course Joe the plumber and all the other Joes are looking out for their own self interest and in so doing want to «build the wealth» for themselves and their loved ones.
Just as a casual observer of «Joe the plumber» I betcha if he makes enough to put $250K. in his own pocket in a year he'll probably spread the wealth a little. The charities, etc. that he chooses will probably be somewhat in his own self-interest.
As a casual observer of the other «Joe the Biden's» tax returns we see how virtuous and unselfish he is. He has made over $250 Million over the last few years and has chosen to spread only about $3600. or so. And his running mate «Barack the Orator» doesn't even spread his wealth to his own poverty stricken relatives.
As I said «virtue» (also selfishness) is in the eye of the beholder.
In regards to the «spreading the wealth» plan (a business talk show this morning better described it as «destroying the wealth - and with it the American Dream») - I guess it has been now downgraded to $120K . Three $50,000 drops in as many days. At this rate by Monday the wealthy will include those living well below the poverty level. By Tuesday (election day) all who work will fall into the spreading the wealth category.
Sounds a lot like «from each according to his ability to each according to his need». I, of course, am a capitalist pig so I behold no «virtue» in that philosophy.
