Still want government health care?

So, the idea of 40% effective vaccinations wasn't enough to convince you that privately funded, market provided health care is superior to the government version? Well, how about ending up with late stage cancer instead of catching it before it's «too late»:

A nationwide study has found that the uninsured and those covered by Medicaid are more likely than those with private insurance to receive a diagnosis of cancer in late stages, often diminishing their chances of survival.

The study found that such patients were 2 to 3 times more likely to be diagnosed in Stage III or Stage IV rather than Stage I for cancers with effective early screening like breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and melanoma. With colon cancer that means a difference between a 93% five year survival rate in Stage I and 8% for Stage IV.

You're going to hear lots of people arguing that this makes a case for more government involvement, ignoring the fact that it was only private insurance, not government funded health care, that was successful in saving lives.

I won't argue with your study but as with everything in life there is always a «but». Playing memory here so please don't crucify me for inaccuracy of details, it's the jist that counts. We rank 35th in healthcare amongst industrialized countries, isn't this a shame for this country? We have 7 times the cost for healthcare compared to industrialized countries. The word free market is becomming the problem here. In a true unsubsidized economy this may not be a problem but this is not what we have. Mostly due to lobyists and political funding our free market economy has been destroyed. The words socialized medicine have always repulsed me but we have a system in deep need of repair and for the sake of an answer I am now open to it. Through openmindedness will come the answers.
I have no medical insurance, can no way aford it. I hope one result of the offshoring of our good jobs will be a realization by more people the boat that poorer Americans are in and that this will make a difference at the polls. See my article Stroke With No Insurance http://kak-madmadworld.blogspot.com/ . I work for mysely and cut a finger 7/8 of the way off, $20,000 for 20 hrs. in the hospital. If this were to happen today I definately will concider dipping a knife in alchohol and finishing the job with one quick slice. From experience you don't feel it. I can afford Neosporin, peroxide and bandages. To finish the previous story I left the hospital was back at the job 24 hrs. after injuring myself, taped a pencil to my cast and proceded to carry on where I left off the day before. My helper called me an asshole so I listened but was back the next morning. This is the kind of thing those of us have to do to make the ends meet. Once every two years my back goes out to the point where I can barely walk, I don't go to doctors I can't afford it. I make myself the cutter, have helpers feed me lumber and work like an eighty year old man doing a very physical job for one to two weeks as I slowly heal, till I'm 100% again in about a month. Do you think it doesn't piss me off to the max to know there are many in my boat collecting comp or socialsecurity and living on the painkillers and muscle relaxants while they also go off and work on the side for cash. I've had them work for me and said to myself there is nothing wrong with this guy. Am I the fool that doesn't go get a job with benefits wait for my back to go and go on comp? I have too much self respect, I can't do that. I have taken many a nasty wound at work and went and bought the Neosporin, peroxide and gause, it's the danger of my job, I'm not crying. Read the stroke article though, thats a different story.

The main problem with American health care is not quality as much as it is costs. Costs have to be brought under control and it's not happening. My father died this Thanksgiving, heart sugery and home on the morning of the third day, home for fifteen minuites and dead. The hospitals know how to cut their costs, push you out the door. It's time something was done to cut our costs, wether it be a single pay system or outright socialized medicine. Reality dictates it, there will still be opportunities for good doctors and medical institutions to go after the dollars of the rich, its called be compeditive build a reputation.

KAK, you actually get to the heart of the problem here:
«The main problem with American health care is not quality as much as it is costs. Costs have to be brought under control and it's not happening.»

The reasons we have those rapidly escalating costs are 1 - government pouring money into healthcare, too many dollars chasing too few resources and 2 - lack of incentive for consumers to control costs (since the payment is almost always made by a third party). Any government run plan is just doing more of the same and expecting a different result, which is, I believe, the definition of insanity.
